Simplifying the chore of getting kids to help around the house

Give kids something to do with all their free time this summer. Assign chores! Often, kids surprise us and feel good about accomplishing something around the house.

• Make a list for the week. Use a chalkboard or whiteboard and hang it somewhere visible.

• Make chores age-specific. (Because some tasks are simply too trivial for cool teenagers.) Actually, handling breakable dishes, trash, or bathroom cleaning products is something for older kids; certain tasks may even require adult supervision.

• Make everyone feel good with rewards. Who doesn’t like cookies or lemonade when the to-do list is all checked off?
